The Canary Islands are the second most visited region in Spain after Catalonia – and little wonder. As they boast great weather all year round and some of the best beaches on the planet. Making them a hot favourite with tourists from sun starved Northern Europe.
Lanzarote is the eastern most link in the chain and can be found just of the North West coast of Africa. The island is famous for its amazing volcanic landscape which was created by huge eruptions during the 18th and 19th centuries, which left much of the interior of the island carpeted in lava. This region was declared a national park back in the 1970’s and is one of the most popular visitor attractions in the Canaries, welcoming close to one million tourists every year.
There are many other natural wonders to explore here too such as the aptly named Valley of 1000 Palms which is in the north of Lanzarote . Here tourists can enjoy a greener and more verdant landscape than in the south and the volcanic region, largely as a result of locals planting a Canarian palm tree for every new baby born in the village of Haria which nestles on the valley floor.
As you’d expect from a well established holiday destination such as Lanzarote there are plenty of accommodation options for visitors to choose from. With over 200 hotels and thousands of villas in Lanzarote available for rent. Prices here are also much more reasonable than in other parts of Spain, such as the Balearic Islands. Reflecting the fact that the season here lasts all year round and not just for a few short months.
There are three main resorts for tourists to choose from; Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise. And each has its own separate identity and attractions. The former is the fastest growing resort of the three and tourists will find a wide selection of apartments and holiday villas in Playa Blanca (2) available for rent. There are also a number of good quality four star hotels lining the seafront offering excellent value accommodation.
As well as the volcanic region Lanzarote is home to the many creations of the famous local artist Cesar Manrique, who developed attractions such as the Jameos del Agua, the Mirador del Rio and the Cactus Garden across a 20 year spell from the 1960´s to the 1980´s. All of which remain amongst the most popular sights on Lanzarote to this day.
